How is gender represented in the Primeval extract?
In the primeval extract it starts off with a woman walking off with the other more dominant men and women characters saying "let her go", and "shes been through quite a lot" which shows her as a victim. The woman in the white hair is seen using heavy machinery this breaks the common stereotype of only a man doing manual, physical work. another point which breaks the stereotype of a 'typical woman' is she is wearing a leather jacket with jeans which is what a man might wear while working. The man wearing the hat is represented more as the typical woman than the woman with white hair (Abby) because he is doing small intricate and delicate work. it could be argued that Abby is in the digger because they know that a dangerous animal is loose and the men had put her in there for her own protection. When Abby takes control and uses the digger to help the man fight back the creature she is seen as equal if not more dominant than the men. This is taken away from her when the man lures the creature away from her. He then traps himself again and this allows Abby to once again save the day asserting her dominance. The shot of the four characters walking in a line can represent there authority, with the woman and weaker man on the ends and the man in the suit and the 'deputy' of the leader in the middle. The character Jenny is the typical characteristic of a woman, she is also like the princess of the clip where she's in danger and has the heros running to save her. She talks down to the farm owner threatening him and holding her power over him. This is flipped when he produces the shot gun and Jenny becomes the helpless princess in need. She wears slightly revealing clothing and heels which isn't what someone would wear when going to a farm. As she is thrown onto the hay she shows the extent of her venerability as the moment when she is saved by her two colleagues who both have handguns, Abby has the same power as the man at this point because they both have guns where as the man in the hat wonders in late and grabs a shovel which would be useless against a shotgun. this shows his dominance in the situation is much lower than everyone except Jenny. At the end of the sequence the hierarchy of dominance is clear.
